Environments: Leo Villareal

Technological innovation that precedes commercial application often finds its way onto the artist’s palette. Advances in light-emitting diodes (LED) represent great promise. Leo Villareal is a light sculptor whose medium is solid-state semiconductors. He works much like an architect, first conceptualizing on the computer with software he writes. He moves back and forth between simulations and physical mock-ups, testing and tweaking the design, until all the issues are resolved. This is especially important for site-specific commissions in which architectural scale is a critical component.
